we change our own filters, and we buy them at Lowes. If they don't have the size you need, they will special order them for you. We have 2 cats, and we change ours about every 6 weeks. If we don't have any filters, we vacuum the ones we have.

I am guessing it is a Heppa filter. If it is you can go to Home Depot and they have a washable Heppa filter that can be cut to size for your A/C system and it is about $ 50.00. My boss actually recommends these to people that have lots of allergies and problems with air quality. We have lots of pollen and such here so they are very popular.

Trust me I would love to let you answer some of the many many service calls I have to answer from people that don't change their filters and then complain when it costs a couple of hundred dollars to clean their coils. Guarantee I don't have to lecture them about changing them often again.
Ahh, you're right.
We've never had a problem in either of our houses. Two dogs (shedding), two adults. High pollen count area (Atlanta).
LOL!! Ok, he just made a liar out of me. I asked him how often he changed the filters in this house, he said between 2-3 months. I guess it was the old house where he changed them less often. Two air conditioning units though, in the new house.

I have worked too many years and seen too many things that were listed as lightning strikes by the owner of the unit and we would not list it that way and they got pissed at us. One in particular wanted us to say lightning damage when it was actually "Smith & Wesson" damage and we could tell since the bullet was still in the unit.
All I know is we got back from South America & our A/C wasn't turning on. Next day we called the local A/C guy, he came out & said it looked like it had been hit by lightning, we said we have no clue, we just got back from being away for 2weeks., so he said call your insurance agent., the insurance agent came out, knew the A/C guy who had inspected our unit and wrote us a check, minus the $500 deductible. So we got a bigger better brand new unit for $500.

When he did the write up it is very common knowledge in the industry to list it as "apparent" lightning damage. We have dealt with lots of insurance companies that require us to give a breakdown of the parts required to "repair" the problem. Funny part is we list all the parts needed and then we give them the cost of replacing the unit and of course the entire unit is cheaper to replace than all the parts. We also give the homeowner options for other units that they could replace the old units with.
