Yes I know. I called last year to make sure It was 0 on the exemptions. She stated it has been 1. So I said please change it to 0. She swears she did that.
So if she did (the accountant) then how come he grossed the same and they took out $400 LESS in taxes instead of more.

I know. I always claim 0 everywhere I work as well. I want the max taken out.

this is why I'm so upset. It doesn't make sense IF she changed it the CORRECT way.

Well to be honest she (accountant) cannot by law change your DH's W-4 without getting it in writing from your DH.

Has your dh's net pay (check amount) changed other than the health insurance deduction? Which by the way does affect the amount withheld since those amounts are deducted pre-tax for FITW - not MC & FICA just FITW.

I think last year he did get a raise which means they should have taken out more anyway. But due to ins. going down he gross stayed the same. ANd she says they don't tax his ins. And I got to thinking I asked her last year if we are paying taxes on health ins. and she says no. However when we file its part of his income so in essence at the end of the year we are paying on it kind of.
Because it looks like thats money he brought home and didn't.
I am going to call her and have her send a w4 to us. She claimed she sent us one last year. We never got it. And I want to see how she has us listed for 2008. Because I was explaining it to my mil and she said something isn't adding up either.

Well if he did get a raise and started paying for health insurance his FITW could have gone down. The FITW is figured on his gross wages minus health insurance cost. If your DH also contributes to a 401k that amount would be taken off of his gross wages before the FITW is figured. So if they started deducting the health insurance this year it would reduce the amount of FITW which could account for the difference. HTH

You can get a W-4 off the IRS website would probably make it easier for you and you would know it was filled out and returned.

Okay NO he does NOT contribute to a 401k or anything. So his wages would have gone UP meaning they should have taken MORE out. Health ins. deduction would go on 2009 taxes NOT 2008. It just started in jan.
So you can see why I'm a little upset. ITs just not adding up. Yes we are making her send us a new one (w4). PLus I intend on setting up an appointment because her reasoning about IF there is a tax cut (which Bush passed a few years ago and empoyees don't see in the checks) she said it is taken off gross. That doesn't even make sense. It does NOT affect how much they earn. It means they should bring more home. ANd they didn't. So there is something seriously off about the way taxes were taken out. I just can't seem to figure out what.....

Ok here is a link to the Employers Circular E for 2008. If you look through it you should be able to figure out how much should have been taken out of your DH's check each week. Keep in mind if there are state deductions you would have to go to your state website to find that info. With the circular E scroll down until you find the section that covers how often your DH is paid and then find his gross wages and then go over to the column that lists how many dependents that should have been claimed. That will get you the FITW number. Then you can multiply your DH's gross wages by 0.062 to find out the amount of FICA that should be deducted and .0145 for the medicare amount. Take the gross wage deduct FITW, FICA and Medicare. Then if there are other deductions subtract them and that is the approximate number your dh's net pay check should be. Keep in mind if they use an accounting program it might get a different number but should be close on the FITW. The FICA and MC should be within a penny. HTH I know it seems like a lot of work but it would give you a close idea of what his pay should have been and what the deductions should have been for a year. There are some things that will also effect the bottom line - such as did they get 51,52 or 53 pay checks in 2008. Our company got 53 because I ran our final payroll for the year on Wednesday instead of Friday which would have been 01/02/09. So we will only get 51 in 2009. This happens all the time just depends on when the last day of the year falls. HTH

Thank you, It will be worth it so I can figure out for myself what should be being taken out. He gets paid monthly so Its only 12 per year. My dh said told me I need to go to school to be an accoutant. I said that won't help us with his payroll!! I have thought about it though. I'm very good with numbers.
Thanks for all of your help!!! I really appreciate it.
