I have had 3 back surgeries and 2 shoulder surgeries and I was just hired as the water aerobics instructor for our gym. That doesn't mean there won't be days where I HURT but damnit don't tell me I can't work there just because it involves exercise or lifting!..lol
Be who you are and say what you feel, those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

I understand the need to make money for your family.
what about the strain it puts on others when someone can not do their job?
If this same person is always on restrictions, out sick or gets light duty while others do their job.
Yes you have to work as a team at any job to get it done but you cant deny that it would add stress to the other workers & the work place.

WE work because we have to plain and simple...If we dont get jobs that are "straining"on the back we have jobs where we stand all day.
As far as helping when a person is restricted or on light duty..I am truley certain that the person is very happy that you helped them out and will certainly help if you need it.
Really?Thats probably not the smartest thing you have done today...HUH?

Then it's up to that person's supervisor to deal with the problem if it's creating undue stress to the other employees.
I know a few of people who are waiting for the approval for diability but in the meantime they have to eat, pay bills, etc... Disabilty approval can take forever to get.
IMHO family comes first and the ability to make a sincere attempt to provide is more important then my coworkers perception of my condition. Like I said if it's that bad, the boss should intervene.

Its when people don't disclose their ailments when getting a job. Like usually an application will ask., Can you lift 20 pounds?, People will lie and say they can., only to get the job., then all the sudden its, Oh I have a bad back.
I understand that employers cannot ask medical history., but if your lying about your capabilities in order to get the job., SHAME ON YOU!!
"You" meaning no one in particular

Thank you! if you know you cant lift when you apply for the job then you shouldn't lie about it.
If you knew before you were hired & then complain when you start to hurt then it's your own fault.

Not only that but they can be terminated for falsifying their application.

before I got hired on where I'm at now, I was very upfront about my back problems. And they didn't care. God I love my job!
Insert cute phrase here

That's the thing, you're being 100% honest and your employer is fully aware of it so no one should say anything about your back problems. If they don't care then neither should the other employees. The management is there to deal with things if someone isn't pulling their weight. I know people who work through a lot of pain and are very product. I'm glad you love your job. I feel the same way. I have 2 herniated discs and there are times that being at work is good for me because if I'm out, I tend to focus too much on what's hurting.
