They are wanting to make the HPV vaccine mandatory in schools

I was watching the news earlier and they were talking about a bunch of states wanting to make the HPV vaccine mandtory for girls entering the 6th grade. I think that is going a bit too far, the shot is expensive and averages around $360. Can you see health departments offering that free of charge? I doubt it.

Honestly, I can kind of agree with it. Since it's a newer drug they are using, I'd have to research it more .. and plan on it in the near future since I have two girls ages 10 & 7 .. I still have time, but I do feel it's important.

I would also like to think if schools were to make it mandatory, than free clinics would have to offer it to low income people, or people with no insurance. Just think of all the girls that would be denied school otherwise!

I understand making the other vaccines mandatory because they are infectious diseases that are spread by airborn germs, but, a sexually transmitted disease? Come on, that is just wrong.

Yeah, but it protects against cervical cancer. And face it more and more kids are getting sexually involved at earlier ages now-a-days. I totally don't believe in that, but it's a sad fact.

I pray my kids aren't one of them and my oldest is starting to learn things from health class, but you can't stop them .. no matter how hard you try.

heh. yeah, I wouldn't want that myself, and it only *MAY* protect against cervical cancer.

We live in an over medicated society already, why are allowing this to happen to our kids? *sigh* I'm not against the shot, I'm just not a believer in something that "may" protect against it.

The duration of vaccine protection is unclear. Current studies (with five-year followup) indicate that the vaccine is effective for at least five years. There is no evidence of waning immunity during that time period. This information will be updated as additional data regarding duration of immunity become available.

The efficacy of this vaccine has mainly been studied in young women (16-26 years of age) who previously had not been exposed to any of the four HPV types in the vaccine. These clinical trials have demonstrated 100% efficacy in preventing cervical precancers caused by the targeted HPV types, and nearly 100% efficacy in preventing vulvar and vaginal precancers and genital warts caused by the targeted HPV types.

so its nearly 100% effective, for five years. who wants to spend $360 every five years for that??

The only cervical cancer that it may protect against is that caused by HPV. It is actually a vaccine for the HPV, not cancer itself.

I have already told my sister that when my neice turns nine(this summer) we are going to find a doctor to give her the vaccine. Then, when my 3 yr turns 9, we will all go to get her shot. Make is a right of passage and a special day or something.

I have HPV and do NOT wish it on anyone, even without the cancer causing strains.

I think if the schools made it manditory, they would have to provide to low income familyies that couldn't afford it. My DD is 5 and when she gets old enough, I'll take her to get.

I don't know much about this vaccine, but I'm really against any 'mandatory' vaccines for something of this nature especially for children of this age. (Yeah, I know kids are much more active earlier on but still......it's not like this is a vaccine against polio or the flu where you really can't control contracting it.)

It was also mentioned that it's a 'newer' drug. Thalidomide was also thought to be a most useful wonder drug with tremendous benefits....we all know how that turned out...

So no, I'm not in agreement with this...

My 8 year old just had a physical exam yesterday. You'd better believe that when she turns 9, she will be getting the vaccine. HPV is prevalent, easy to get, and there is no cure. Cervical cancer aside, it can also cause really ugly grapelike clusters of fleshy warts. I didn't know that by age 50, 80% of women have been infected with HPV. Most people don't even know that they have it. I will certainly take this opportunity to protect her from getting something in the future that could cause cervical cancer.

I hear ya after learning more and more about I am taking my daughter to the dr so see what he recommends us to do as she just turned 9
