Re: Health Insurance
Medicaid is not a federal program. Each individual state is responsible for their Medicaid program. That is why there are so many variants from state to state. A lot of disabled people are on SSI. SSI is administered through the SSA. This makes SSI a federal program. If you are disabled and receive SSI payments you automatically qualify for the Medicaid program in the state where you live. The Medicaid bemefits are still mandated to the state you reside in. For instance if you live in Tennessee you will not have the same Medicaid benefits as in Florida.

Re: Health Insurance
Sorry but we can't all be too poor and not work to qualify for medicare
It is extremely expensive to get any sort of healthcare. Here you need to be either pregnant or making just 10,000 for a single person (so maybe if I stopped working as much, got pregnant, then maybe I'd qualify for medicare+foodstamps+even more money, but sorry I'm not going to lower myself if I am able to work). I just found it pretty offensive you would even think everyone would have healthcare. I'd be paying 200 a month for it, rent, food, gas, etc. AS A SINGLE PERSON living on their own. All I make living on my own is 1,200 a month plus all my expenses, but sorry I can't fit in 200 dollars worth of healthcare (that's with company HELPING to pay some of it) into my budget. My budget barely scrapes it to get by, let alone afford healthcare. I really feel the govt needs to help people inbetween. It's ridiculous as I was looking at some healthplans from the govt they said right on them that if you aren''t a legal citizen you could STILL QUALIFY I bet I'd make a much richer living just being a bum and living off welfare quite honestly and I wish the system was reworked. BTW I don't mean to come off as dissing anyone on welfare on hard times, just those that ABUSE it that I have a problem with.

Re: Health Insurance
Medicaid in ohio has started making people pay co pays one their prescriptions for anyone over 21 to me this is a bit insane these people cant hardly aford to drive to the pharmacy to get their meds but now they are having to pay for part of it and a lot of meds are not covered anymore and more and more drugs are being added to this list leaving these people getting sicker and sicker and then they end up in the hospital and the state has to pay for that to me that makes the state end up paying more than if they just covered the meds the people needed. we have a neighbor that has been in the hospital 3 times due to this stupid goverment program. who ever is in charge of it needes to be fired and get someone in there that has some brains so these people can get the care they need!!

Re: Health Insurance
I'm in Ohio and I've seen my employers health insurance bill. Even though we are in a 'group type' coverage for a single plan it's near $350 a month and for a family plan it's around $850!
If you were to go it alone with any employer based health care and used the same HMO we are using a single person is around $1100 a month and a family is well over $2200 A MONTH! I've looked into it.
It is decent coverage... no deductable, 10/15 doc visits, 10/20/50 RX and $50 ambulance but still there are many new meds that are not covered and they have dropped one med that I was taking because they said it was too expensive. Yes a precious $50 a month is expensive to them.
Finding a job around here with health coverage is not easy, I'm not in Columbus or Cinci but smalltown USA. I stay here because of the coverage. I'm screwed without it.

That's better than decent coverage. I haven't paid copays that low since...well...never. Maybe before I turned 18 my mom got away with it, but that was 10 years ago. I pay $182/mth for medical & dental insurance on myself and dh. My employer is eating the majority of the costs and for that I'm grateful. The bad thing is they keep upping the deductible in order to be able to afford it. It was $750, but just changed to $1000 on July 1st. My copays are:
$20 Office visit
$50 Specialist
$150/20% Emergency Room
$50 Urgent Care
$10/$30/$60 RX
20% Inpatient and Other Outpatient Services
I'm currently pregnant and even with insurance I'm going to be out a LOT of money. I had to pay my ob the deductible and 20% upfront, which was $1250. I will have to pay 20% of my hospital stay, anesthesia, and having my tubes tied after the baby is born. I'm lucky I found out I was pregnant when I did because we used our tax refund to pay the OB so we wouldn't have to worry about it every month. I can't wait to see the hospital bill.

Re: Health Insurance
I don't have that type of problems with Health Insurance. I have Medicaid & Medicare. I don't pay anything. I never have since I was getting it when I was 18.
But, My husband don't have insurance and neither does my son. I have 2 bills I half to pay from them both being seen in the doctors office. My husband is making payments on them.

Re: Health Insurance
I think the reason for so many people with no insurance, is JUST like the other posters said! H-I-G-H RATES and bad coverage, for those excessively high rates! I have a $2500 Deductible and then it only covers 80% of my HOSPITAL bill. I have NO doctor's office coverage, NO Xrays, NO Emergency Room Coverage (Unless admitted) NO bloodwork or labtests, NO Prescriptions, or Outpatient coverage. I pay $201 per month and am now looking around for something else. I am covered under Golden Rule Insurance. I did have a better policy until 8 months ago, with $2500 Deductible. BUT, they upped the rates to $380 per month for just ME! My husband is on Disability too, and I am home with him. We have a limited, fixed income. Soooooo....THAT is why *I* don't have good insurance. Because, IF I could work back at the hospital again, where I was employed before, I would have great insurance!
****Oh, here's another Free PRESCRIPTION CARD Program! I HAVE used this card successfully! -- Just last week, at Walmart Pharmacy and it took 40% off my Estrogen Replacement Tablets! Hope this helps someone else!!!
