Re: Health Insurance
Maybe it was because we were froeigners but I and friends got great care in Yugoslavia, Germany, Austria and England (was not as good as the others). China was frighening. Broken windows in the childrens ward with mold growing on IV tubes. Saw this and my girlfriend arranged to take her son out, flew him back here for treatment. Italy was very good too.
It is great that as specialists, you charge less for your patients. I was speaking only from my experience. I had no deductible with BC/BS. I still hold a grudge 5 years later, espically since I read a newpaper article posted in the waiting room about how my kids doc goes to foreign lands and contributes his services for free. If they were not so good, I'd leave and get a new doc.

The wait list for various treatments may be up to 18 months. The welfare system in Canada is currently under review due to mishandling and abuse. The healthcare professionals are not paid well, and many are leaving to come and work in the USA. Medicines are sold freely, and are not as powerful as the ones regulated here.
Well, I have family in Canada and overseas in Europe. Nobody has ever had to wait for a non-threatening surgery or proecedure. I don't see the US got allowing new parents to take a year off work and receive 80% pay. Nor does this govt give parents a stipend/month until the child reaches age seven. Nor does this country provide for its elderly like others. I'm not going to argue as the facts speak for themselves. Have a nice day all!

Re: Health Insurance
Medicaid requirements vary slightly from state to state. If you make even like $5 over the limit here in FL, you don't get it. One of the teaching hospitals here has their own clinic card. You have to be denied by Medicaid and you have to have an ongoing medical problem to be eligible. Once approved your doctor visits and your meds are free; you just have to go to the same hospital for all of your care. I know other cities that I've lived in had the same type of program. As far as Canadian drugs, my dad has been getting his heart and glaucoma meds from Canada for over 5 years and has not had a problem. He is getting the same name brand drugs he bought here, he just pays almost 40% less. I don't know if it is true, but when I was still working as an RN, the drug company reps from companies like Merck and Eli Lilly, and Glaxo Smith Kline were some of the ones who used to say that Canadian drugs were of a weaker strength. I don't know if that was the truth or was it to discourage people from buying them, if sales went down, so would their commissions.

Re: Health Insurance
All the major drug companies have deals with the government and insurance companies...hence many insurance companies refuse to cover genetic drugs. A genetic drug doesn't line the drug companies pocket. Nor does the insurance company make as of huge of a profit. There is a huge waiting period before a genetic drug can hit the market. By the time the waiting period is up, a newer drug is out. The drug companies here will say anything to discourage a customer from buying elsewhere. The costs of the medications are @ something 150%+ of a profit to everyone involved. The patient pays for this greed.
Being 20 minutes from the Canadian border here in Detroit, I see so many elderly individuals that go over to Canada for their drugs. I don't see how the drugs would be any weaker, if the ssame strength dosage as here. These drug and insurance companies are making a killing! My insurance (Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan) has gone up twice last year! Normally it increases just once a year. The second hike was to the tune of $80!. I pay approximately $700 every two months.

Please be careful doing this. They just did a story not too long ago on dateline or 20/20 or one of those shows about all the fake medicines from China filtering into the states through Canada and Mexico. Specifically it was a woman who had cancer and the meds she was getting had things like dry wall and asbestos in them. It was horrifying how easy it was for them to get shipped to America, too.
I found the story.

Re: Health Insurance
I saw that same program. It was right here in the USA. They have a distribution center here. Reputable places like Walgreens, CVS etc. have gotten taken. They need a better system of checks and balances.

You are joking, right? Insurance is expensive. Because I am not preggers I do not qualify for Medicaid or any government help in my state. I am not over 65 or disabled so I do not qualify for Medicare. My income right now is a joke. There are lots of others who are worse off than me or in the same boat as me. That is like asking why homeless people don't just go out and get a home/job because it is so easy and just not getting it. Just because you may have things in your life does not mean it is so easy for others. So now you Get it, right?
