I know you said you had a big backyard, but alot of garage salers won't get out of the car unless they see something they are interested in. I would place furniture and some other stuff in the front yard. Have a HUGE sign letting people know there is more in back. The people who buy the larger ticket items are typically shopping for that item specifically. If they do not see it, they keep on going.
The oil is all in Texas, but the dipsticks are in D.C.

Hubby and I used saw horses we had in the garage, and laid a large peice of wood down on top, for a table (we made two tables this way) , when we had our last garage sale...We also got some sturdy cable and strung it between to large trees in our yard, to hand clothes on. Other than that we used a couple of old card tables...we used some boxes..One we made a .25 box (everything inside was .25), a $1 box, .50 box, etc. I had a box that had stuffed animals (each priced separately), a box for books, etc.

I have served iced tea or a big pot of coffee at my garage sales
and that really increased sales.
Rope is cheap - I agree, hang it between 2 trees.
Do you have a fence where you could display items on hangers?
Don't put items on the ground....could become soiled or folks
won't be able to bendover and pick them up as noted above.

My sis also sold drinks and baked good at her sales, and made alot of money doing it..She made homemade frosted sugar cookies, she sold for $1 each, bottled water (she picked up a 24 pack in bulk for $6) sold for $1 each..frozen candy bars $1 each, freezer pops .50 each, I have also seen people selling frozen air heads candy for .50 each...You could sell Kool-aid, lemonade, punch, etc. Here everyone usually has yards sales on July fourth, when it is really hot and humid...so they make good money selling popsicles/ice cream sandwiches/bars, etc. I have also sold cans of soda for $1 a can and made good money from it too.

I used my kids trampoline,worked great to put folded clothes around.
I also bbq hotdogs and have soda for sell (I think that brought in more then the sale lol)
