I agree that the howling was due to being in heat. Did the cat use the litter box when she was in? I have a feral cat that I brought in last year. Yes, she was pregnant. We found a group through a vet that fosters animals for adoption because I couldn't find homes. Check in your area. My little wildcat hasn't left the house in over 8 months, and finally accepts being subordinate kitty to my other cat. It takes time, be patient, and good luck!
