    The Govenor's Wife

First - as a resident of Louisiana I would like to apoligise to the nation for the most ignorant "reality show" since "Honey Boo Boo"

The name of the show is "The Govenor's Wife" when it should be "The Convicted Felon and Former Govenor's Wife" but that is seemingly too long for TV and viewer's attention spans.

On July 29, 2011, Edwards married then 32-year-old Trina Grimes Scott, a Republican originally from Alexandria, at the Monteleone Hotel in New Orleans. A prison pen pal, she is fifty-one years his junior.

Beginning in February 2013, Edwin and Trina Edwards will be featured in their own reality show, called The Governor's Wife, on the Arts & Entertainment Network. The program will focus on Trina's rearing of teenaged sons and acting as stepmother to Edwards' daughters who are almost twice her age. According to the A&E description of the program: "Between school projects, running for president of the Homeowner's Association, fending off skeptics who think she's a gold digger, and thoughts of adding a baby of their own to the mix, the Edwards clan truly represents a new take on the modern family."

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Just one week after a federal judge agreed to cut short former Louisiana Gov. Edwin Edwards' court supervision following his release from prison, his wife announces that they are expecting a baby.

She made the announcement via Facebook Friday. She wrote "As of today I am officially allowed to make that announcement I've been dying to make...WE ARE EXPECTING!! I still pretty sick, but I'm in my 12th week so hopefully I will be feeling better soon and we will be able to resume filming!"

A reality television show about the 85-year-old Edwards and his 34-year-old wife, Trina Scott Edwards, is scheduled to debut later this month on A&E.

Edwards was sentenced to three years of supervised release, however, he only served 18 months of that before a judge agreed to end it early.

Edwards served eight years in federal prison and six months of home detention after he was convicted in 2000 for his role in a riverboat casino licensing scandal.

The idea of them using the Bidens' as a "reality show" wouldn't surprise me as they have a show in the works for Louisiana's former Gov ( and felon ) Edwin Edwards and his bride ....

Set your DVR. Former Louisiana Gov. Edwin Edwards and his family are the subject of a new docu-series premiering next month on A&E, Entertainment Weekly reports: http://insidetv.ew.com/2013/01/04/edwin-edwards

The Governor’s Wife will star 85-year-old Edwin Edwards and his 34-year-old wife, Trina, along with several of their children from previous marriages. Edwards served four times as Louisiana’s governor over the course of three decades, and also served eight years in federal prison for crimes committed while he was in office. In 2001, Edwards was convicted on bribery and extortion charges. He became pen pals with Trina during his prison stint and they married after his release last year.

The show will focus on Edwin and Trina’s May-December relationship and follow Edwin’s daughters (Anna, a 62-year-old, four-time divorcée and Victoria, a 60-year-old ex-showgirl) along Trina’s sons (Logan, 15 and Trevor, 13).

Some official description: “The series follows Trina as she attempts to fit into the former governor’s upscale world and busy social life while trying to get along with daughters twice her age and corral her teenage sons. Between school projects, running for president of the Homeowner’s Association, fending off skeptics who think she’s a gold digger, and thoughts of adding a baby of their own to the mix, the Edwards clan truly represent a new take on the modern family.”
If you follow Trina on FB she is all about using IVF to get pregnant... ewwww....

LSU loses money on Edwards interview
    Capitol news bureau - September 19, 2013

LSU’s Student Union Theater lost more than $45,000 recently when the pairing of former Gov. Edwin Edwards with retired broadcaster Larry King for an onstage interview didn’t draw enough interest to cover expenses.

LSU Student Union Theater Director Michael Derr refused Wednesday to go into detail about how well tickets for other shows sell or how often the venue typically sells out. “We put on a whole series of shows and we subsidize every one of them,” Derr said before referring all other questions to LSU’s public relations team.

LSU put out a statement late Wednesday as a reminder that no public funds were used to bring King and Edwards to campus. Union Theater performances are paid for through student fees and ticket sales. “Through comprehensive marketing efforts to sell tickets and active solicitation of donor funds, we strive to have each performance be self-sufficient,” the statement read.

LSU sold 532 tickets and handed out 146 complementary tickets for a venue that holds more than 1,200 people.

LSU paid King $66,400 and provided him with a hotel suite for two nights at $300 per night. The university paid Edwards $6,000 for his appearance. Additionally, the Sept. 9 event was “offered free of charge to LSU students since the opportunity to hear from King and Edwards was one of learning and enhancement that students may not have otherwise had access to. Nearly 100 students took advantage of the free offer and attended the show,” the statement said.

LSU spokesman Ernie Ballard added that the university is not looking to turn a profit by putting on different programs.

Ballard said the theater holds more than 100 events per year, nine of which are part of the “Union Theater Presents” series. Attendance varies at the show, he said, with performances by Anjelah Johnson, Colin & Brad and “Swan Lake” selling out last year.

Some of the smaller shows, Ballard said, draw audiences of only a few hundred. Overall, the theater’s average attendance is 487 attendees.

Despite not filling the venue, King, Edwards and his biographer, Leo Honeycutt, drew a standing ovation at the beginning of the event with several more rounds of applause throughout the evening as the former governor quipped on his wife’s attractiveness, his political philosophy and his time in federal prison.

LSU is suffering under a severe budget cut from the Jindal administration and they paid Larry King $66,000???!!! Someone needs to be fired. Since it was Larry King who charged such a ridiculously high fee, shouldn't this article be entitled 'LSU loses money on King event'?

    ..

Interesting that the University believes it adds to the value of the education of its students to hear from convicted felon Edwards and uses student fees for that purpose. I am, however, encouraged that out of an enrollment population of approximately 30,000 students - 100 showed up even though it was "free". I put the free in quotes because the other 29,900 helped pay for it.

    ..

Louisiana lost money on Edwards. Irony overload.

A&E releases details on 'The Governor's Wife,' starring Edwin Edwards and wife, Trina

Although spots appeared over the weekend marking the premiere date for "The Governor's Wife," the reality TV show starring former La. Gov. Edwin Edwards and his wife, Trina, A&E made it official Sept. 26. The network issued a press release giving a little more detail on the show's plot, some aspects of which have already played out in Louisiana's public sphere given the recent birth of the couple's son.

Here's what A&E had to say about the new show, which premieres Oct. 27 at 9 p.m. CST. Check it out, then let us know if you'll be tuning in.

"Edwin Edwards, now 86 years old and still dubbed the 'King of Louisiana, shocked the state (and his family) when he married Trina Grimes Scott, a woman 50 years his junior. They became pen pals while Edwin was serving an 8 ½ year prison sentence for bribery and extortion - charges stemming from his tenure as Governor of Louisiana - and married when Edwin was released. This colorful couple heads a newly combined family comprised of Edwin’s daughters: Anna, a 63-year-old, four-time divorcée and Victoria, a seen-it-all former performer who is never far from her electronic cigarette, as well as Trina’s sons from a previous marriage, 16-year-old Logan and 14-year-old Trevor.

The series follows Trina as she discovers Edwin’s reserve of frozen sperm and tries to grow the family, while also attempting to fit into the former governor’s Southern high society, get along with stepdaughters twice her age, corral her teenage sons and fend off skeptics who think she’s a gold digger. The Edwards’ unexpected dynamic redefines what it means to be a modern family."

A&E airs final episodes of 'The Governor's Wife' early Sunday without warning

Following a dismal ratings scorecard, A&E appears to have dumped "The Governor's Wife." The network aired all four of the season's remaining episodes Sunday, Nov. 10, between the hours of 10 a.m. and noon.

The TV show-specific website currently says new episodes air at 10 p.m. on Sundays, but "Duck Dynasty" re-runs rolled on through the time-slot Nov. 10.

The show, which stars former La. Gov. Edwin Edwards and his wife, Trina, lost 35,000 viewers between its first and second episodes in its first night, and reviews from across the country were generally unfavorable.

In interacting with fans during the final episodes, Trina Edwards tweeted "we moved time slots," though it didn't appear she offered any further explanation.

    @SundraHTDA

@EdwardsTrina Is there a new episode of #governorswife tonight?

@EdwardsTrina: we moved time slots. It was this morning.

The reality is that the joke's on Edwin Edwards
    JR Ball, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune October 30, 2013 at 11:57 PM

In a nod to his prior convction, former La. Gov. Edwin Edwards poses in this screenshot of a promotion video for "The Governor's Wife," which made its premiere this past Sunday. (Image via A&E screenshot)

Forgive me, Baton Rouge, for I have sinned.

It's been three, guilt-ridden days since succumbing to the insidious temptation of "The Governor's Wife" -- the latest reality series to make Louisiana look like a confederacy of idiots -- and I still feel dirty.

Seriously, what in the name of "Sunday Night Football in America" possessed me to do such a thing?

How, on a night when life was good following the Saints' second-half march over the Buffalo Bills, could I forsake my vow of Edwin-Edwards-family-antics celibacy?

Yet, against all sane and rational judgment, there was my left thumb dancing lightly, but purposefully across the protruding nubs of the remote control. Despite the counsel of friends to satisfy any desires for Sunday night reality voyeurism with a marathon run of Les Stroud's "Survivorman," something other than my brain was urging my thumb to press 1-0-3-9 on the remote. My mind, in a futile, last-ditch attempt to regain control, thought about a pristine recording of Showtime's "Springsteen and I" on the DVR, but there was that cursed thumb pausing nervously before pressing down hard on the "select" button.

"Homeland" be damned, my gratuitous viewing pleasure belonged to Edwin and Trina Edwards.

    I am a moron.

For those with the intestinal fortitude of abstinence, the show, in essence, is an attempt to make Trina into something she's not -- a somebody. It's an odyssey Edwards' 30-something wife began when she became the prison pen pal of Edwards, the charismatic former "Cajun Prince" governor who was serving time for a variety of federal crimes. Upon his release, the pair married and suddenly the 86-year-old ex-con, ex-governor and his bombshell bride, a mere 50 years his junior, are the self-proclaimed king and queen of Louisiana. They "reign" over the Bayou State from a faux French Country McMansion in Gonzales, and joining in the merriment are Trina's -- ahem - stepdaughters, Victoria and Anna Edwards

Against that backdrop, the show chronicles a) Trina's bid to get pregnant from Edwin's almost-forgotten frozen sperm, b) Trina's attempt to shed her "gold digger, white trash" reputation, c) Victoria's and Anna's efforts to protect whatever inheritance remains after the feds took a sizeable chunk of Edwin's stash following his conviction, and d) Edwin's penchant for uttering amusing, though well-worn, one-liners.

What this show is not is an attempt to rehabilitate Edwards' image. Just the opposite, the man who once presided over the state for four terms in the 1970s and '80s seems hell-bent on recapturing a sliver of his fun-loving past.

Sadly, for Edwards and his devotees, the show makes it obvious that time has passed Edwards and his era by.

The show, among many things, is a painful reminder of a time in Louisiana history when this state's potential for greatness -- thanks to a remarkable boom in the oil and gas industry -- was wasted in favor of a decade-plus attitude of laissez les bon temps rouler. A time when the citizens of this state, increasingly uneducated and unhealthy, were so blinded by Edwards' undeniable charm that only a live boy or a dead girl in his bed could knock him off his throne. Those days, fortunately for all of us, are long gone.

The evolution began under Mike Foster and has carried on through the administrations of Kathleen Blanco and Bobby Jindal. People can rant and rave about Jindal's politics and policies, but no one can say -- with a straight face, at least -- that this state is still seen as some corrupt, third-world carnival sideshow by the rest of America.

Jindal's promise of a "Louisiana miracle" might be falling short, but Edwards is a guaranteed Louisiana embarrassment.

To me, this "reality" show is a sad reminder of an inglorious past. For those who love and revere Edwards it must be sad to see this once powerful man reduced to a cartoon-like caricature of his former self. Aside from the sexist quips, Edwards comes off as some elder simpleton who runs around turning off lights by day and playing poker with a few cronies at night. (I actually agree with Edwards on the matter of turning off lights.)

Love him or hate him, his impact on this state was tremendous and continues today. Given that, is this really how Edwards wants to go out? Is his ego -- or Trina's zeal for 15 minutes of notoriety -- so large that he's willing to become Louisiana's version of Jesse Ventura?

Others will likely continue to be fascinated with the show and its ode to Louisiana's tawdry past. I, on the other hand, acknowledge my original episode sin by saying, "Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa."

I also watched the show on Sunday night, and I agree that it is awful. There is nothing remotely interesting about Edwards, Trina, his daughters, or anyone else in the show. The show basically ignores Edwards' conviction and jail term, focusing instead on his obsession with turning off lights, and his selfish and foolish desire to father a child which will never know his father (that actually might be a good thing for the kid). With respect to Edwards' legacy, some of the comments below are funnier than the show. You are really going to give Edwards credit for economic development? The only thing the state did for economic development during his 16 years was to greatly increase the size of government and to take on industries that most other states didn't want (polluting chemical plants and casinos). He tried to turn New Orleans into Las Vegas, but luckily he failed. When Edwards left office the state was at or near the bottom on every list of business friendly states. I might not agree with everything that Jindal has done, but Louisiana now ranks near the top of many lists for business development, has an umemployment rate significantly lower than the national rate, has higher job growth than most cities, and is attacting high tech industries that never would have considered coming here under Edwards' corrupt administration.

    ..

He actually got people to believe he cared for the poor and the less fortunate even though these same people can't tell you what he did for them as govenor.

    ..

I am going to suggest that there were NOT "well over 100 chemical plants and refineries" built between Baton Rouge and New Orleans during Edwards' four terms as governor. Given that exactly zero were built during his final four years in office, that would mean an average of 8.3 plans and refineries were built during his first 12 years in office. There was a great expansion of the petrochemical industry during his time in office, no doubt. My issue with Mr. Edwards on this front was how his administration chose to spend the significant influx of money into state coffers. Thanks for writing and for taking the time to share your views.

    ..

Those plants built in the seventies had more to do with historical high oil prices than anything else. We can not forget the number of white collar oil company jobs that LEFT New Orleans and Louisiana during Edward's tenure.

Remember when One Shell Square was filled with Shell employees?

    ..

In reality, the joke is really not on him, but the viewers. Edwin summed it up best when asked about the show in an interview. He stated the show may very well bomb, but he will, and I quote, "laugh all the way to the bank". He knew exactly what he was doing.
