Phase 4 Picks Up U.S. Rights to Hugh Hefner Doc

Look for the Brigitte Berman documentary, 'Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel,' to come to a theater near you this spring.

According to Variety, Phase 4 Films has purchased all U.S. rights to the Brigitte Berman documentary, 'Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel,' (and nontheatrical rights in Canada) and is planning on a late spring 2010 release. The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last September.

Berman, who won an Oscar for her 1985 documentary, 'Artie Shaw: Time Is All You've Got,' was granted wide-ranging access to the 83-year-old Hefner, whose founding of Playboy magazine in 1953 marked a seminal moment in the sexual revolution.

Making liberal use of Hefner's extensive archives, Berman conducted interviews with dozens of his friends and associates, including filmmaker George Lucas, legendary singer Tony Bennett and Rainbow Coalition founder Jesse Jackson.

'Playboy, Activist and Rebel' aims to illustrate the difference between public perceptions of Hefner, whose swinging lifestyle personified an era of libido liberation during the '60s and '70s, and the idea of Hefner as a guardian and proponent of liberal values, including the fight for civil rights, freedom of choice for women, gay rights, protections of the First Amendment and other progressive causes.

Variety noted that the version of the documentary to be screened is 11 minutes shorter than the one that premiered in Toronto.

Hefner is a scummy old letch. His "girlfriends" are high priced whores. And the thought of ANYONE giving a flying rat's azz about him and his tarts says VOLUMES about the mindset of this degrading society. Money doesn't make you respectable and this ridiculous piece of "train wreck" fluff won't help anything but his bank account.

The sequel---Hefner, old, degenerate, Viagra using cradle robber.

Very interesting. He's done lots of wonderful things but of course many people overlook it because *shock* he enjoys sex.
