Question about American Express Gift Checks

I hope it's okay to ask this here-I have $20 in AE gift checks that I received from Home Comfort Research Panel awhile back. I already signed them (just the part that says "sign here immediately") and I was planning on using them at a store, but the cashier had never seen them before and there was a huge line of people behind me so I just said I'd pay with cash instead. I'd much rather just go and cash these in since everytime I try to pay for things with them, people have no idea what they are and what to call their managers over! But I don't have any kind of banking or checking account-can I just go to a bank and ask for the cash, or will they only do that for you if you have an account with them?

i would call around a few banks in your area. I would think they would treat that like cash and cash it out for you. I have cashed them before at a bank and they didnt ask if i had an account. Good luck

The manager of the store you went must be stupid! American Express Gift Checks are treated like travelers checks. I would contact the store by phone and ask how to reach his supervisor.

Ive received one once. Didnt bother with the stores (they know squat as it is)I went straight to my bank where they know me by name and had it cashed. I had no problems and they even helped me out letting me know all the spots to sign.

I think I'll give one of the banks a shot-I really don't see why it'd be a problem. Otherwise, I'll try to use it at a restaurant or something where there won't be a million people waiting impatiently behind me!
