    Is this a stupid idea?

You know how high the deficit is and how states don't have enough money to run them now. Why not start a United States lottery run by the government for all fifty states and use all the money made toward the deficit and for the states and government programs. Like the postal service and other programs. Do you think something like that would work? I bet people all over the U.S. would buy the tickets and you would think it would generate a lot of revenue. And they'd have to pay income tax on it so that would help too.

the politicians would just drain the money away. How many states or cities sold the idea of a Lottery in order to provide funds for education ?? How far did that go ??

Then what will we do with all the people that waste their grocery money to win a zillion dollars in the Government lottery? Oh I know fork out more money for them to buy food through food stamps. The ONLY way the economy can and will grow is if people are allowed to start and grow small businesses which is the actual backbone of this country = Not the big businesses. But the Democrat's don't want you to know that.

Yeah I guess you're right. They aren't using the money for education on the ones they have now are they. If people would just do what they say they will this world would be a better place.

They do actually use the money for education however no one reads the fine print on these deals. For instance in Florida the money was ONLY to be used for "new programs" not existing programs/classes/teachers/buildings. So our wonderful legislators decided well education is getting all this lottery money so let's cut the budget on per child spending by that amount. So our schools actually get less money to pay teachers, build or renovate buildings and purchase books & supplies.

In Illinois the lottery is used for education. But they play the numbers games. For example, 10 million earmarked for education, lottery money is 10 million, this goes into the education general fund but 10 million usually earmarked for education goes elsewhere. If any of us started a business and did this same thing, we would probably be arrested under RICO and go to jail.
