Anyone here have a job as a Librarian, or know someone who is?

I'm 29 and looking at going back to college to get a Master's Degree in Information and Library Sciences this fall from Wayne State University in Detroit. I will be a distance student (I'm in Grand Rapids, MI) but I wanted to know if there was anyone I could talk to and ask questions of about their experiences in Library Science.

My bachelor's is in Journalism with a concentration in Public Relations/Design but here in Michigan with an unemployment rate of over 10.8% again, it's just not doing me any favors and I'd like to push myself forward while I can. I have a supportive boyfriend and great family here and plan to stay in Michigan if possible and want to do this before life, marriage, family, kids or whatnot may draw my energies elsewhere. I don't want to regret not doing this in five, ten years.

I currently have a job paying $12/hour but I have no future there. No where to go, no higher level to aspire too and I need something more. I love research, books, writing, libraries and helping people find the information they need or to expose them to books. Michigan offers a potential $10,000 tuition grant through the state which I am going to try for, but may pursue this dream anyways.

I've always wanted to work in a public library I just don't know anyone really in the field and I'm going to be too far away from Wayne State in order to stop in and talk to someone there, so if you know anyone I can contact with some general questions about how they landed their first job, are they happy with what the do, etc... I would love to talk to them!

I just want to get to know more people in the field and maybe learn how I can get involved with things being apart from the school.

If you can help, or know someone who wouldn't mind talking to me, I would appreciate it!

    Thanks!

I would like to go back to school for this as well. Have you applied anywhere yet? Some libraries are looking for people to start off in basic shelving etc. and then end up moving them up. Some libraries offer tuition reimbursement as well. Good luck to you!
