    If you are using mom/dad as a name (Proper Noun) it is capitalized.

    "Mom is my best friend"

    If you are using mom/dad as a regular noun it is not.

    "My mom is my best friend"

    I used to always get confused over when to capitalize this but always just remembered that if I was calling my mother Mom then it was the same as using her name which would be capitalized and if I was just talking about my mom then I didn't have to.
