Need Ideas and Suggestions for a school dance Disco/Retro theme

I Need Ideas for our school dance can you share your ideas with me????
The person in charge of the school dance had to back out in oct. She came to me and asked if i would do it. I said yes and at the meeting in oct I asked about the dance. I was told I would be given info as it came closer and the dance was after the first of the year. So last thurs we have our pta board meeting and they hand me the list of parents who signed up to help with the dance. The dance is.......FEB. 4th

AHHHHHHHHHH I am freaking out here. No ideas at all and have to get it planned asap.
They used a sock hop theme last year and this year changed the theme to disco.
Ok so I was born in 76 not a big expert on disco.

I am going to call the local dance school to see if they have any high school girls that will come and show the kids the electic slide and any other little dances,I am working on getting a d.j.,We are going to have popcorn, I am going to call the local grocery to find out about getting drinks.I am going to take polaroids and asked one of the parents who airbrushes to do a back ground for the pics. I need to make some sort of frame for the polariods any ideas for that would be great.
But I need help with decorative ideas, center pieces for about 8-9 tables.Any type of game or contest that the kids might be able to do.We have aprox. 400 kids k-6th grade in our school. I am guessing about 35-50%. Can you please share any ideas you have that will help me?I do have a budget.
But am very short on time. Please Please share your brilliant ideas.

Also need ideas for a announcement letter also.

Maybe you can hang some blank or old cd's from the wall.. to kinda give it a glitter disco feel. Like a bunch of mini disco balls?? Just take two CD or DVD's or CD-Roms and glue them so that the shiny side is on the outside. I'm sure you can scrounge up a ton of these just go to any electronics store and look for those AOL discs.. I'm sorry I'm not much more help. I was born in 79 so I'm like you on this subject....

From what I remember of the grand old days of disco...ahem, I seem to remember lights being a big part of disco's. Hang twinkle lights from the ceiling. Make them blink. Too bad you couldn't get some shag carpet. I remember that hanging on the walls. Gotta have a dj. In a booth.

Man, disco was really tacky. Fun, but tacky.

lava lamps. Black light posters? silver and gold ceiling-to-floor streamers.. Maybe have G rate 70's movie playing on a TV in the background.. strobe lights or those different colored lighted balls. Am I being of any help with my rambling ideas? lol.

Disco balls! I saw them at Christmas time as ornaments. Pretty cheap, too.
Too bad you aren't closer, I have 3 lava lights, and a rotating disco light you could borrow!

You could hang silver crepe paper from the ceiling, like a curtain on the walls. It's pretty cheap, too. And it gives a real disco look with christmas lights.

It actually sounds like a fun time. I sure wish I could help.

You can make frames out of card stock to put the pictures. Use plan card stock and have them decorate them with glitter and embleshiments or stickers.. Heres a picture of what they look like if you bought them instead of making them. Or if you dont' want to make a cut out for frames you can glue the pictures to a piece of card stock that has a slite in the bottom for the part of the poloraid that is plain white and then have them put stickers and such around the picture... You could even do different color card stock if white is too plain.

LindaL..has a great idea, I will push it a bit forward..BLACK lights is a great idea and if you go buy cheapy black light posters, you can cut them and hang them and attach on fishing wire and hang them..so they dangle with the movement and heats of sorts, also any kind of colored lights, take off the lamp shades, gosh you gotta get music,"WE ARE FAMILY", a MUST, and Peaches and HERB, is fun for Non disco kiddies and if I get flamed so be it MICHAEL JACKSON'S, OFF THE WALL CD is great, come on who can't try to dance to "SHAKE YOUR BODY UNTO the FLOOR", and if you can get someone to teach the BUS STOP, that is a fun line dance..you could get a TV set up, the bigger the better and Saturday Night Fever on Mute in the background and heck that soundtrack works, try to get kids in POLYESTER clothes, we all got some hanging around, or a thrift is cheapy.. WIGS would be fun a kinda TRY ON and get your picture taken area..that is a great theme..I have 2 disco balls, sorry I am not there, I would have a riot..try to find POP ROCKS that was 70's for sure, they are back and fun candy that target is selling I see that represents this era..I am sure I can think of more and crepe paper anything works..I would go further once the party starts and music and dancing in going on, I would get some oversized regular latex ballons and get those in the air, 1/2 helium 1/2 air..see how long those can last, but I would get a dozen, that is fun to play with..Silly STRING, is always good a pain to clean up but this for the kiddies..
Just some thoughts is all..
Have fun..I would wear my Jan Brady MARCIA WIG...but not there..too bad for me...

Ok well.....
I have a dj lined up
I have prizes from the local skating rink, laser tag, & godfathers pizza for costumes and dance contest.
I am currently waiting on the local grocery and walmart to let me know if they will help with the soda,
I am also waiting on the local dance school to call me back about sending a high school student to help teach the kids some dances.
I sent fliers to the school for them to send home.

I am waiting to see how much we will have to spend on polaroid film and soda to see how much $$ we have left for decorations. I also need to find out if the dj has a strobe light? or a disco ball. I looked in the gym and there is not much room for decorations. I am thinking some streamers/bead strings for the door way. Then some mylar balloons (we cant use latex district wide rule), some confetti on tables.I still need to figure out what to do for the pics but other then that I would say I am about half done. lol.

My ds wants to wear some white bell bottoms, a vest, and a big gold chain with a afro wig LOL. He is all about looking like a pimp.
