    Allergy testing

Hi, I have a question for someone, anyone to answer... I am taking my 4 yr old to have allergy testing done on Thursday.. They are doing the skin prick procedure.. Now my question is are they going to give her any type of sedation or no? Anyone who has any experience with this I would be most appreciative..

    Thanks

Luckly I was able to be tested through blood work so there was only onestick and that was it. It was expensive but worth it. Good luck to you and hopefully they will do something to make it not so bad for her.

Unfortunately, they cant give a sedative because that might alter the testing. Just be sure to have Benadryl or something similar to give your child when they are all done. Good Luck!!

Actually, at the office where I got mine done, they did the testing on the child's thighs and they give you a prescription for this numbing stuff to put on an hour or two before the test (and you have to cover it with cellophane..lol) - But my husband had it done as a kid and he said they did it on his back, so you never know - If you have questions, I'd ask your doctor since it's different everywhere!
Make sure she isn't taking any allergy medications now though And I would suggest taking some anti-itch cream with you - I used the Aveeno kind, but really anything should work. They applied some after they were done with me, but I needed more within the hour.

    Good luck!

    Re: Allergy testing

My 2 1/2 yr old nephew is going next Monday for the allergy skin test. He is not allowed any type of medicines, including Benedryl, for 10 days before the test. He has HORRIFIC excema and they are trying to figure out if certain things aggravate it. He has been off his meds for 5 days(I think) and has scratched himself bloody in places.

I hope they find out what your baby is allergic to. I know they will all feel better if they can pinpoint the problem and treat it.

    Re: Allergy testing

My DS had this done a few years back(he would've been @5 then) and I seem to remember them wiping the skin with something to numb it.

He is a huge baby with needles but he did fine for this. No crying. Good luck-I hope you get some answers.

    Re: Allergy testing

When I was tested for allergies, they did mine on my back and it tickled more than it hurt when they were applying the allergens. They did put an anti-itch cream on as soon as the test was complete. Like mentioned above, call the office that is doing the test and see how it is handled there.

My neice was not even 1 when she had hers done on her back. If they give her anything at all, it was a numbing cream, but I dont even think she had that. She didnt cry at all. So from what IVe seen, it isn't bad at all.
