Here are some interesting and strange but helpful hints.
Note: I haven't tried all of these but it doesn't hurt to try.
1. Cool whip will condition your hair in 15 minutes.
2. If you get Elmer's Glue or paint on your face, allow it to dry, and then peel off and see the dead skin and blackheads it takes with it. Also works to remove splinters or cactus spines- just let the paint dry on your skin, then peel it off.
3. Do you want Shiny Hair - use brewed Lipton Tea
4. Sunburn - empty a large jar of Nestea into your bath water
5.. Burn your tongue? Put sugar on it!
6. Bee stings - apply meat tenderizer. Salt and soda are excellent for bee stings and spider bites.
7. Chigger bite - apply Preparation H
8. Puffy eyes - massage the area with Preparation H
9. Paper cut - apply crazy glue or chap stick. Glue is used instead of sutures at most hospitals lately
10. Use Kool-Aid to clean dishwasher pipes. Just put in the detergent section and run a cycle, it will also clean a toilet.
11. Kool-Aid also can be used as a dye in paint
12. Kool-Aid mixed in plain yogurt, then used as finger paint, "Your kids will love it and it won't hurt them if they eat it!"
13. Sticking bicycle chain - Pam no-stick cooking spray
14. Pam will also remove paint, and grease from your hands! Keep a can in your garage for your hubby
15. Peanut butter will remove ink from the face of dolls
16. When the doll clothes are hard to put on, sprinkle with cornstarch and watch them slide on
17. Tie Dye T-Shirt - mix a solution of Kool-Aid in a container, tie a rubber band around a section of the t-shirt and soak
18. Stress buster - preferably for a work group - take a roll of scotch tape and a packet of straws and build a tower without talking to each other!
19. Preserving a newspaper clipping - large bottle of club soda and ½ cup of milk of magnesia, soak for 20 min and let dry, will last for years!
20. Use Pampers as an absorbent! Remove stains from the carpet with club soda and a Pamper to absorb.
21. To remove wax - Take a paper towel and iron it over the wax stain it will absorb into the towel.
22. Remove labels off glassware etc. rub with peanut butter!
23. Baked on food: fill container with water, add a Bounce softener sheet and the static from the Bounce will cause the baked on food to adhere to it. Soak overnight. Also; you can use two Efferdent tablets, soak overnight!
24. Crayon on the wall - Colgate toothpaste and brush it!
25. Dirty grout - Apply Listerine
26. Stains on clothes - dab with Colgate toothpaste.
Ripe tomatoes will remove ink stains.
27. Grass stains - Dab on Karo Syrup or try molasses.
28. Grease Stains- Coca Cola, it will also remove grease stains from the driveway overnight. We know it will take corrosion from batteries!
29. Sweat Stains - Efferdent, or vinegar
30. Do you have Fleas in your carpet? Apply 20 Mule Team Borax- sprinkle and let stand for 24 hours, then vacuum. Salt used in sweeping carpets keeps out moths.
31. To Keep FRESH FLOWERS longer - just add a little Clorox, or 2 Bayer aspirin, or just use 7-up instead of water to stand them in.
32 Fleas do not like brewers yeast.
Don't like garlic either. Ask your dog.

Stewed Chicken with Parsley Dumplings
Stewed chicken:
• 1 (3 lb.) stewing chicken, cut into parts
• Salt
• 10 peppercorns
• 1 rib celery, with leaves
• 1 medium onion, peeled and quartered
• 1 carrot, peeled and roughly chopped
• 1/2 bay leaf
Parsley dumplings:
• 1 1/2 c. flour
• 2 tsp. baking powder
• 3/4 tsp. salt
• 2 tbsp. chopped fresh parsley
• 1/2 tsp. chopped fresh rosemary
• 3 tbsp. vegetable shortening
• 3/4 c. milk, approximately
• 3 tbsp. flour
To make chicken: Rinse the chicken pieces under cold running water. Place in a heavy kettle or Dutch oven and barely cover with water. Sprinkle with salt and the peppercorns.
Add the celery, onion, carrot and bay leaf. Cover and bring to a boil; reduce the heat and simmer gently until the chicken meat begins to loosen from the bones, about 2 to 3 hours.
To make dumplings: Mix flour, baking powder and salt. Add the parsley and rosemary and mix. Chop in the shortening until the mixture resembles coarse cornmeal. Add enough milk to make a thick batter that can be mounded up in a spoon and dropped.
Drop the dumpling dough from a wet tablespoon onto the boiling stew, letting the dumplings rest on the meat. Cover tightly, reduce the heat and cook, without raising the cover, for 15 minutes. Transfer the dumplings to a hot platter.
Thicken the stew with flour mixed with water. Serve immediately, using the dumplings as a border around the chicken.

• 2 c. chopped fresh pineapple
• 1 small avocado, peeled, pitted and thinly sliced
• 1 c. sliced strawberries
• 3 kiwifruit, peeled and sliced

Arrange lettuce on 4 salad plates. Divide papaya, pineapple, avocado, strawberries and kiwifruit among plates.
In small bowl, combine lime juice, mint, oil and sugar. Mix well. Adjust sweetness to taste. Drizzle over fruit. Let stand 10 minutes before serving.
Blue Hamburgers
• 1 1/2 lb. (80 percent lean) ground beef
• 1 tbsp. crushed dried rosemary
• 1 tsp. salt
• 1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
• Olive oil for oiling grill rack and brushing on onions
• 1 large red onion, cut into six round slices ( 1/4-in. thick)
• One (6-to 8-oz.) piece of Saga blue cheese (or another creamy-style blue cheese), cut into 6 slices
• 6 good quality hamburger buns, lightly toasted
• 6 leaves red leaf lettuce or other crispy lettuce
Combine ground beef, rosemary, salt and pepper in a medium bowl and mix well to combine. Shape into six 1/2-inch-thick patties. (Patties can be prepared 1 day ahead. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate.)
When ready to cook burgers, oil a grill rack and arrange 4 to 5 inches from heat source. Prepare the grill for a hot fire. Brush onions on both sides with some oil. Grill burgers and onions about 3 to 4 minutes per side, using a metal spatula to turn them. (Internal temperature of burgers should be 160 degrees when cooked.) When burgers are almost done, cover with sliced Saga blue and continue to cook until cheese melts. Onions are done when slightly charred and soft when pierced with a knife.
To serve, arrange burgers on bottom buns and top with onion slices and lettuce. Cover with tops of buns and serve immediately.

Karithopita (Walnut Cake)
For cake:
• 6 eggs
• 2 1/4 c. sugar
• 1 1/2 c. vegetable oil
• Juice squeezed from 1 fresh orange
• 3/4 tsp. cinnamon
• 1/2 tsp. freshly grated nutmeg
• 1/4 tsp. cloves
• 4 1/2 tsp. baking powder
• 3/4 tsp. baking soda
• 3 c. flour (whisked then lightly spooned into measure)
• 2 c. chopped walnuts
For syrup:
• 4 c. sugar
• 4 c. water
• 1/2 orange
• 1/2 lemon
• 8 cloves
• 1 stick cinnamon
To make cake: Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Beat eggs until pale, thick and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Gradually beat in sugar. Gradually beat in oil, slowly drizzling oil into bowl. Continue beating until mixture is very light and thick, about 10 minutes. Beat in orange juice, then cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. Combine baking powder and baking soda with a little of the flour and beat into mixture. Gradually beat in flour. By hand stir in walnuts and turn batter into 15-by 11--inch baking pan. Bake for 20 minutes, then reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees and bake 20 minutes longer. Cool cake 15 minutes.
While cake is baking, combine sugar, water, orange, lemon, cloves and cinnamon stick in large-diameter pot set over medium-high heat. Squeeze juice from orange and lemon halves as they are added to pot. Boil until 2/3 of volume evaporates and mixture is consistency of thin syrup. Immediately pour hot syrup over cooled cake. Let the cake stand overnight before cutting so that cake soaks up all syrup.
Note:Traditionally, karithopita is cut into diamonds: First cut lengthwise rows, then cut crosswise rows at an angle. Stud each piece with a whole clove.

Kourabiethes
1 1/2 lb. (6 sticks) unsalted butter
• 1 1/2 c. plus 2 lb. powdered sugar, divided
• 4 egg yolks
• 1 tbsp. vanilla extract
• 1 tbsp. almond extract
• 1 tbsp. baking powder
• 2 tsp. baking soda
• 2 3/4 c. blanched slivered almonds, toasted and cooled
• 6 c. flour (whisked then lightly spooned into measure)
• Rose water or brandy, for misting over cookies
Melt butter in saucepan over low heat. Skim and discard foam. Place saucepan in refrigerator until butter hardens. Transfer hard butter to mixing bowl; discard remaining liquid. Bring butter to room temperature.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Whip butter until very light and fluffy, about 10 minutes. Gradually beat in 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar; continue beating 5 minutes. Beat in egg yolks; continue beating 5 minutes. Beat in vanilla and almond extracts, baking powder and baking soda. By hand stir in almonds. Gradually mix in flour by hand.
Shape into crescents, using generous 2 tablespoons of dough for each. Place crescents 1 inch apart on ungreased insulated baking sheets. Bake until cookies are very pale golden, 12 to 14 minutes. Immediately remove cookies from baking sheets to waxed paper-covered countertop. Use spray bottle to mist rose water over hot cookies. Immediately sift powdered sugar over cookies, thickly blanketing them. Let cookies cool completely. Sift additional powdered sugar over cooled cookies, enough to cover by at least 1/2 inch.
Option -- toasted slivered almonds. To toast them, spread slivered almonds in single layer on baking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees until pale golden, shaking pan once or twice, 8 to 10 minutes. Cool toasted almonds before adding to cookie dough.
Melomakarona
• 1/2 lb. (2 sticks) butter, softened
• 3 egg yolks
• 1 c. sugar, divided
• 1 1/2 c. vegetable oil, divided
• 1 tsp. baking soda
• 1 c. freshly squeezed orange juice
• 2 tsp. baking powder
• 1 tsp. cinnamon
• 1/2 tsp. freshly grated nutmeg
• 7 1/2 c. flour (whisked then lightly spooned into measure), divided
• 2 lb. honey
• 2 c. chopped walnuts
Using electric mixer, briefly beat softened butter. Beat in egg yolks. Gradually beat in 1/2 cup of sugar; beat 2 minutes. Gradually beat in 3/4 cup of oil, slowly drizzling oil into bowl. Repeat procedure with remaining sugar and oil; continue to beat until mixture is very light and emulsified, 5 minutes.
Dissolve baking soda into orange juice, add to mixer and beat 3 minutes. Combine cinnamon and nutmeg with a few tablespoons of the flour and beat into mixture. Transfer to very large bowl and by hand stir in flour, incorporating flour from outside in, as if kneading and keeping dough from sticking to bowl. Transfer dough to clean bowl, cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours or overnight.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Use a soup spoon to scrape dough into oval shapes, as if scooping very hard ice cream. Scrape enough dough to mound on spoon and very gently press dough against spoon before tapping out 1 inch apart onto baking sheet. Bake until cookies are very pale golden around edges, 15 to 20 minutes. Let cookies cool on baking sheet.
Use double boiler or deep fryer to heat honey until thin and very hot. Add as many cool cookies as will fit in one layer on surface of honey. Let cookies soak up hot honey 4 minutes, turning once. Transfer honey-soaked cookies to rack set over waxed paper and sprinkle each one with chopped walnuts. Repeat with remaining cookies.
Note -- Use a rotary nut mill -- sold in grocery stores -- to chop the walnuts for these cookies and the Walnut Cake (posted earlier); the rounded pieces of walnuts and fine walnut powder the mill produces are just right for these recipes. Honeyed walnuts that remain on waxed paper after cookies are done are great mixed into plain yogurt.
