Police: Roseville man burned toddler for playing with wrapping paper on Christmas

Roseville police say a resident of the Detroit suburb burned his girlfriend's 13-month-old child with a cigarette lighter for playing with wrapping paper on Christmas.

Twenty-year-old Scott Carlson was arraigned Monday on first-degree child abuse charges. His bond is $50,000 bond, and his next court date is Jan. 5. The jail says it doesn't yet have information on him.

Police Deputy Chief James Berlin tells the Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News that Carlson was watching the child while his girlfriend worked. Berlin says Carlson burned the child's feet and caused bruises on the child's head, back and buttocks.

Berlin isn't saying if it's a boy or girl.

He says the baby's grandparents spotted the injuries and took the child to a hospital Christmas night. The hospital called police.
