    Re: Isn't This Racism ??

Okay there are obviously varying 'nationalities' of the month. So, why is it called "Black" History and not "African" History month?

I also re-read the poem several times, and I am still having a problem with the last line "Nothing has changed take a look at our streets". Plenty has changed. She is disrespecting Rosa Parks, she is disrespecting Martin Luther King, etc......they have struggled, suffered and have made great strides for 'their race' as well as others such as JFK who helped make strides for the injustices put upon previous generations.

Are we truly at a point where the races are totally equal? No, but that time is coming only this poem can do more damage to that struggle for it is offensive to the 'white nationalism'. The attitudes of the 'whites' has certainly changed, and for those who continue to break the barriers to be told that nothing has changed is quite offensive.

Also, why were whites singled out that they should be seated? I'm sure you are aware of the 'body language' that this implies.....the person standing is held at a 'higher stature' and is 'talking down' to the other, a superior pose. If it's equality that's desired, it does them an injustice to assume the 'superior' stance.

I agree if one is not educated to the past, we are doomed to repeat it, but must we constantly 're-live' it? It appears to me that this child, is re-living slavery, and the injustices.....not learning of it. This is a such a burden (unnecessary) for a child to carry and I feel it will instill hatred and negativity toward the 'whites'. (I really don't like speaking in terms of whites/blacks, us/them.)

Now the pledge....“I pledge allegiance to my black people. I pledge to develop my mind and body to the greatest extent possible. I will learn all that I can in order to give my best to my people in their struggle for liberation.”

Wouldn't it have had a greater impact and be further reaching, healing, supportive and respecting to have the white/Asian/Hispanic child standing next to her saying this pledge with her to show a solidarity and to honor the 'African' History month?

“I pledge allegiance to humanity. I pledge to develop my mind and body to the greatest extent possible. I will learn all that I can in order to give my best to people in their struggle for liberation.”

There is power in numbers and 'black' people cannot 'liberate' themselves on their own.......and have not been the only ones working toward 'their' equality. If their goal is to truly 'see no color', they must stop defining and separating and start 'embracing'.

    GUNS GERMS AND STEEL

    www.pbs.org/previews/gunsgermssteel/

Jared Diamond's revolutionary theories about the course of human civilization come to the screen in GUNS, GERMS, AND STEEL: A NATIONAL GEOGRPHIC PRESENTATION, a new three-part television series produced exclusively for PBS. Diamond's Pulitzer Prize-winning work offers a revealing look at the rise and fall of societies through the lens of geography, technology, biology and economics - forces symbolized by the power of guns, germs and steel. The series airs on PBS Mondays, July 11-25, 2005. Check local listings.
The production spans five continents and uses epic historical re-enactments to illustrate Diamond's theories, explaining why societies developed differently in different parts of the world - why some became conquerors and others the conquered.
Visually compelling, the series uses a widescreen format and features footage from such richly diverse countries as Jordan, Peru, Spain, Zambia, South Africa, Papua New Guinea, the United Kingdom and the United States. GUNS, GERMS, AND STEEL explores the central idea of Diamond's thesis: geography as destiny. Why is it that some countries have so much and others have so little, Diamond asks? What led to the development of sophisticated weaponry, and how did that contribute to the downfall of some civilizations? Why are certain groups of people immune to strains of germs while others are not? And finally, how did all of these factors create the inequalities that still exist in the world?
To seek the answers to monumental questions such as these, GUNS, GERMS, AND STEEL features insight from some of the world's pre-eminent scholars, historians, archaeologists, biologists and anthropologists. The series also travels back in time to look at the origins of human civilization and traces its progress to the present day.
The first episode, "Out of Eden," proposes that a society's potential for advanced development was not determined by race or creed, or by time and experience, but by access to domesticated animals and cultivated plants. Part two, "Conquest," explores the impact of weapons and disease in shaping the conquest of the New World.
The final episode, "Into the Tropics," examines the development and colonization of Africa by South Africans and Europeans, and explains why geography is still a factor in forming the divide between those with money and resources and those without.
"This series takes Jared Diamond's key insight - geography as destiny - and explores it through science, history and archaeology around the world. It is 13,000 years of history condensed into an extraordinary intellectual journey," said Michael Rosenfeld, executive vice president, programming and production for National Geographic Television & Film. "Of course, Jared Diamond's thinking continued to evolve after the book was published, and the series reflects his recent efforts to apply his ideas to the modern world."

I took "steel laden feet" to reference shackles....

tricks, alcohol and deceit.....these can be the 'shackles'

thus tricks, alcohol and deceit is what is keeping them 'imprisoned' (shackled)

Okay, but they are then imposing this definition to all white people by telling the 'whites' to be seated.....

Nazi's haven't changed neither (they still exist) but I wouldn't tell all the Germans to remain seated....????

MORGAN I think references the Morgan report which is about the overthrow of the Hawaiian Empire."tricks, alcohol and deceit" usually reference Native American History. Small poxed blankets, "treaties" the fur traders used to poison the whiskey...

    Re: Isn't This Racism ??

I am still waiting for your personal opinion.

You know Jolie, I did not post a reply on the original thread because at that time I was actually rather perturbed with the subject. I had been listening to talk radio for 2 days on the subject. I breaks my heart to see such a young child already currupted with so much contempt toward another race....yes, to be a RACIST!

Here in Mempis our black population outnumbers the white population. Most of our elected officials are black...and mainly for that reason. Last night I was sitting here listening to the police scanner because I heard the Police helicopter hovering and I wanted to check to see what was going on (we live in Midtown Memphis). I left the scanner on for a while (never learned about the helicopter though) and during this time out of all the calls, the "suspects" were black males. And they have the nerve to say that we are profiling? I don't get it. I am not saying that crimes are not committed by whites also....they are...but the majority of the crime in this city is committed by blacks.

Our murder rate as of yesterday morning (haven't listened to the news today) was at 59 for the year. Two days ago there was a armed robbery at a bank branch in Kroger....in broad daylight with a store full of people. Just for the heck of it they also shot one person in the face with a shot gun. I have not heard anything on the status of this person.

I try not to be prejudiced because I believe that we are ALL created equal. It seems though that the only time that I even run into this problem is when I live in Memphis (this is my second time to live here). I get so tired of everything being about race. In my opinion that only makes the racism problem worse. I have never been handed anything in my life, I have always had to work for it. So when one "race" is given things based on their race, yes it ticks me off. I have no problem with people being given a helping hand...the problem is when the helping hand is EXPECTED and people chose not to help themselves.
I posted the above back in May (just in case you missed it). If you notice the difference in the number of murders between then and now. I don't know the official total as of today, but just a week ago we stood at 159. That was 100 murders in just 6 months! Almost every day you see a drug deal going down on the corner and then there is always the prostitution and the transvestites (sp?) walking the neighborhoods. Oh, and did I mention these people are blacks?

So, how the heck is the problems of the blacks deliberate actions by the whites? As I stated, this city is run by blacks and look at the condition it is in. So once again, how can the condition of this city not be blamed on the black population? How is this another situation where the white man is keeping the black man down? It sounds more to me to be an age old excuse for not taking responsibility for ones own actions and not caring who gets hurt in the process.

The poem is about oppression caused by White Nationalism sitting and standing is symbolic to rising above oppression.

Okay, I am going to read a poem written by a skinhead and tell all the non-whites to stay seated. Oh boy!! I can see it now!

    Re: Isn't This Racism ??

I need to go but....this is a 7 year old girl being 'home schooled' by her father and is considered a 'prodigy'. My opinion is this appears to me to be more of the father's poem, than the child's. More of the father's opinion being 'angrily' delivered by the child.

If I keep telling my children that a horrible Asian man beat and tortured their grandfather and grandmother to death....my child would grow up passionately hating Asians! (Which is not the case and no offense intended - just an example.)

This child should be out playing with children of all colors and not being thrust into the limelight on her father's agenda. She should learn of her heritage, but move past it, not get stuck in it.

If her father wants to recite his poems, or publish his works, fine......then HE should.....don't puppet your child.

This is upsetting because it was delivered to middle and high schoolers.....way above their head in comprehension. If you, Mikaer, are studying this in college...how much of an impression do you think this made on the children. They more than likely just heard black and white, whites be seated....and spoken to angrily....certainly not making any new 'friends'...but offending.
