    Eating what we have.

    During Covid, I purchased a bunch of canned and dry goods since we were eating at home a lot more, and many things were shoved to the back of the shelves. I recently cleared out the shelves to better organize them and found a lot were on the verge of expiration. I know expired food can be eaten but should be eaten before the date for better quality. It's hard to believe Covid was back in 2020 and most canned food has about 3 years before they are out of date. I've brought those items up from the basement into the kitchen and am trying to get those used. Our grocery bill has dramatically gone down this last month and I've donated things I found we did not like or I won't use.
    If you found yourself overbuying during the Covid lockdown check your labels, I went to the grocery store a lot out of boredom because nothing else was open.

    We buy multiples of things when they are on sale. I write the date on the tops of cans, sides of boxes, etc. with a magic marker so it stands out. Only takes a couple minutes, but it helps when I need to put things in date order. And when I open my pantry door those dates are visible. Also -- you can freeze lots of things as their dates approach -- gives you a little extra time to use it. I reserve a corner of my grocery list for items I'm missing from a recipe in order to buy them on sale and use what I have on hand to use up items.
